August Notes
From The President
August 13, 2006
Dear Club Members, Guests, and New Shooters
Dear RPS Members & Guests,
I think it was both the design and the particular combination
of the stages that made this match so exciting and challenging
for the 28 folks that came to our range in the woods.
Chuck Hathaway added a twist to the plate rack of doom
that required the shooters to think about what they were
doing, and not just hose the plates one after the other.
Stage two was a limited round count, six only, firing through
the culvert, two papers, two each, and two steel plates to
take down. Reload, drop to your side or belly, and fire six
more, two each on three papers. All paper on this one had
half the target behind hard cover.
Stage three, by Ken Dexter, was inspired, he said, by the
shoot-out in Open Range, that great film with Robert Duvall
and Kevin Costner. 17 rounds required, lots of movement,
lots of bullets, lawnmower man making another star appearance,
good use of cover needed, shooting on the move—all
the elements that get your adrenaline rushing when the buzzer
sounds.
As far as I know, no one was stopped by the cops and had
to explain why they smelled like cheap beer, even though
they hadn’t had a drop-to drink. We all certainly had
more than a drop or two on us after stage four. Ken Dexter
again helped by providing a BIG packing crate that we transformed
into a dumpster. Load six only to start, pop up the lid with
your head, and shoot the beer can right there in front of
you. Then on to steel fallers (those great ones with t-shirts
on) made by Skip Jones and Pat Rowan. Shoot ‘em near
to far till they’re all down. Reload by dropping down
into the dumpster and reloading in relative dark, then popping
up again and finishing the stage.
What can I say, we’re the best. Thanks once again
to Darrell Godwin, our range master, for a smooth and well-organized
event, and to all who helped design the stages. Thanks
also to those folks who appeared on Saturday for setup,
and there were quite a few. Many hands make light work.
And to all the safety officers and trainees—THANK
YOU for your hours of work keeping us safe and letting
the members relax and enjoy the match.
Thank you also to Chuck Hathaway for maintaining the web
site, Dick Whetstone for formatting and emailing scores and
this letter, and to our peerless scoremeister-Pam Tidd.
We had two new shooters from Santa Rosa that came to participate-Clayton
and Katherine. Peter did a safety class with them on Saturday
and they made a great showing on Sunday. Both shooting a
Springfield XD in 9mm. They’ll both try to shoot the
next match in September, and the classifier in October. Jim
Valli was there after traveling long distances one more time.
His friend Pat also came to shoot again.
Next match is Sunday September 10, with setup on Saturday,
September 9. That will actually be our last match. October
will bring our last of the season classifier on Sunday, October
8. Darrell and I and Ken spoke of shooting the classifier
on BOTH Saturday the 7th AND Sunday the 8th. It’s a
long day no matter what, and breaking it into two days might
give us the chance to also put up a fun stage-like shotguns.
I’ll keep us all posted.
Peter Matlin, President
